Scenic Byways
When traveling north on Route 3 as you cross the town line between Clarksville and Pittsburg you will ride along beside the Connrcticut River. This is one of the most scenic area in the Pittsburg area especially during the foliage season. This is also an area where one can sometimes catch a look at the famous American Bald Eagle. A little further up the highway you enter into a meadow land area where the Indian Stream river enters the Connecticut River. These fields are only part of the large farm land area still owned by some of the descendents of the original settlers. At the junction of Tabor Rd. and Route 3 is located the recently refurbished 1 room school house now owned by Roy Amey and is restored to the original condition.
Continuing north through the village you will find numerous homes that were built in the mid to late 1800’s as well as the Indian Stream Republic historic marker. Heading north on Route 3 you will come to Lake Francis which is approximately 7 miles long and is considered to be one of the most picturesque lakes is the state of new hampshire especially during sunrises and sunsets as well as the entire the foliage season. The next lake is Back Lake, a fishing paradise for rainbows and some Brown Trout. This Lake is surrounded by single homes and several hunting and fishing lodges. Shortly after leaving the lake Francis area and heading north you will cross the bridge at Perry Stream and looking to the right you will see one of the covered bridges crossing this stream which can be driven over. The second covered bridge crossing Perry Stream is located on River Rd not far from the Lake Francis State Park and Camping area. Still traveling north on Route 3 you will approach the 1st Conn. Lake. Here you can get a panoramic view by turning onto Stuart Young Road and going all the way to the top. Again continuing north on Route 3 and turning onto Round Pond Rd and turning around allows a great view of the head of the lake. The next area is what is called MOOSE ALLEY located near the turn to Magalloway Mtn. Rd. This is a tourist attraction as this is where the moose are and they love to ham is up for those that have cameras. Also located on the Magalloway Rd is the hiking trail up mt. magalloway to the fire tower which affords a spectacular scenic view. The next points of intrest are the 2nd and 3rd Conn. Lakes and the 140,000 acres that is sets in. Approaching the Canadian Border you cross into Canada only a couple of hundred feet and you receive a great view of the Canadian country side. As you travel south on Route 3 you again get a different view of the areas you have already seen. At the junction of Hill RD turn left and go across the covered bridge and following the road you will get a great view of Lake Francis and the village of Pittsburg, coming back out on Route 3. Going south on Route 3 turn onto Route 145 and cross the Conn. River bridge and then turn left going onto Cedar Rd to Danforth Rd. At the top turn around and get a spectacular view of the dam at Lake Francis and a panoramic view of the village of Pittsburg. This panorama is especially beautiful during the foliage season.
