Sightseeing

Planning a visit to Pittsburg? Here are the top ten things to see while you are here!

Visit Moose Alley! Travel north of the village of Pittsburg approximately 11 miles. Moose Alley is a section of Rte 3 north of the First Connecticut Lake where in the early morning and at dusk every night spring thru fall moose come to the road’s edge to graze and ‘people watch’.

The Connecticut Lakes are a beautiful chain of lakes with the majority if not all of the shore line is undeveloped. There are boat launches on all of the lakes including the northern most Third Connecticut. The Connecticut Lakes are natural lakes, the dams were installed for flood management. Lake Francis (the southernmost lake) was man made in the 1930s.

Mt. Magalloway: The view from the fire tower at the summit of Mt Magalloway is worth the 45 minute hike to the summit! At 3360’ above sea level with a fire tower at its summit, the view from this spot goes on for miles! See the Connecticut Lakes, mountain in Maine, the presidential range in the White Mountains and more on a clear day. Travel north on Rte 3 11 miles from town to Magalloway Road. Follow the signs on the dirt road 5 miles then take the tower road the remaining 3 miles to the trail head. Good shoes and water are recommended.

East Inlet is a special place in the forest. It is a 60 acre pond/flowage where moose often come to graze on the aquatic plants which grow at the water’s edge. Canoe or kayak the pond to explore its beauty. There is also a virgin stand of forest here.

Fourth Connecticut Lake is not actually a lake but rather a bog pond that lies on the border of US and Canada and it is the headwaters of the Connecticut River. The Nature Conservancy owns this area and maintains a unique hiking trail to the spot. The trail straddles the US / Canadian border and the border markers are embedded in the rocks that form the trail. The hike takes approximately 45 minutes. Park across from the US Customs and then go behind the customs house to access the trail. No passport needed!

Covered Bridges: In true New England fashion, Pittsburg has covered bridges crossing the Connecticut River. We have three actually, one of which is still in use for vehicular traffic. Just below the village is the Bacon Bridge on Fletcher Rd. No longer in use, but open to pedestrians, this bridge connects Pittsburg to Clarksville NH. Here also is the site of the old Baldwin mill. Next is the Happy Corner bridge 6 miles north of the village on Hill Rd. This bridge crossing Perry Stream is still in use. The northern most bridge can be accessed from River Rd. This bridge also spans Perry Stream but is no longer in use.

Garfield Falls on the Dead Diamond River is a favorite summer spot for swimming and exploring. The adventure begins on Magalloway Road, 11 miles north of the village. Stay on Magalloway Road 11 miles, when the road turns to go over a bridge, stay straight and go another mile. There will be a turn out on both sides of the road and the trail begins on the left side of the road. Only about a quarter mile from the road, this spot is not only beautiful but great for swimming under the falls.

Fall Foliage: Our fall foliage is nothing less than spectacular! Falls comes early to the Great North Woods and our leaves reach their peak color during the last two weeks of September; nearly two weeks ahead of the White Mountains!

Snowmobile Trails: Our snowmobile trails are second to none! We have the best trails in New England and beyond! We have more than 200 miles of trails here in Pittsburg that connect to Canada, Maine and Vermont. It’s a great way to enjoy all the beauty Pittburg has to offer in the winter.

Fly fishing is a popular sport that has deep roots here. The Connecticut River has two sections of water that is ‘fly fishing only’ as well as 7 area ponds! The diversification of fishing in our area is like no other place. Big lakes, small ponds, streams and the legendary Connecticut River are all within a 15 minute drive. Never fly fished? We have numerous fishing guides that can teach you! We even teach fly fishing to our students in high school!
