The River

The Connecticut River starts its 400 mile journey to the sea here in Pittsburg! It rises at the height of land on the Canadian border and begins its decent to Old Saybrook CT. Canoeing and kayaking the Connecticut is a fun way to spend the day but not all of the upper reaches of the Connecticut can be navigated. The first place a kayak or canoe can be safely launched is just south of the village of Pittsburg downstream from the Bacon Bridge on Fletcher’s Rd. There is a small turnout on the river side where one could launch. Then take out above the confluence of Halls Stream or above the Canaan / Stewartstown dam. In between the confluence of Halls Stream and the dam, the river narrows and is very rocky. Passage is not recommended unless the paddlers have skill and experience. Below the dam on the Vermont side is a small boat launch. The river below the dam is gentle and it meanders through the pastoral valley towards Colebrook NH. Take out across from the rest area on Rte 3 in Colebrook NH.

Lakes and Ponds

All of Pittsburg’s lakes and ponds have boat launches or access areas from which a kayak or canoe can be launched along with a place to park. Caution is advised on the lakes as the weather can change in a heartbeat. If the weather becomes windy or a storm kicks up, waves can form very quickly and caution is advised!
